There is something welcoming about coming home on a cool fall evening. The porch light is on a little earlier, a favorite blanket finds its way back to the couch, and before long, the calendar starts filling up with school activities, family visits, and holiday plans. It is a good time to give the house a little attention, before the busiest part of the season gets here.

Getting ready does not have to mean spending a whole weekend cleaning. We would rather see you enjoy your home than worry over every corner of it. A few thoughtful habits can help with the dirt left behind by summer and the everyday mess that comes with fall, whether you are in Lawton, Fort Sill, Elgin, Cache, or another of our southwest Oklahoma communities.

Start where everyone comes through the door

Leaves on the porch are part of fall. Leaves in the hallway, along with red dirt and muddy paw prints, are a little less welcome. Before you tackle the rest of the house, take a look at the doors your family uses most. Shake out the mats, sweep the steps, and give shoes a place to land that is not the living room carpet.

An outdoor mat and a washable indoor mat can help catch loose dirt along the way. Keep them clean and dry, and make sure they lie flat without getting in the way of the door. If you have a dog that enjoys the yard, a towel near the back door makes wiping paws easier. Small changes like these are often easier to keep up with than another round of cleaning at the end of the day.

Give your carpets a little attention after summer

Between kids coming and going, pets, summer company, and trips in from the yard, carpet gets plenty of use. Fall is a good opportunity to slow down with the vacuum and pay attention to the paths everyone walks. Make steady passes through the entry, hallway, and living room, using the settings your carpet and vacuum manufacturers recommend.

Move light items out of the way so you can reach around chair legs and along the edges of the room. Leave heavy furniture where it is if moving it would be difficult or unsafe. You do not need to rearrange the whole house to make a useful start.

If a well-used room still looks soiled after vacuuming, or a spot keeps coming back, it may be time to ask about professional carpet cleaning. Tell us which rooms concern you and what you have already tried. That gives us a better place to start than asking you to guess at another cleaner from the store.

Remember the places where people settle in

The couch where everyone watches a game and the chair a grandparent always chooses deserve a place on the fall cleaning list, too. Remove loose crumbs and pet hair with an upholstery attachment if the furniture's care instructions allow it. Check between cushions and along seams, and wash removable covers only when the label says they are washable.

Not every fabric can be cleaned with water or the same product you use on carpet. Read the care tag before treating a spot, and do not soak the cushions. If the instructions are unclear, or the fabric needs more attention than a gentle vacuuming, our upholstery cleaning page is a helpful place to learn more. You are welcome to ask us about your furniture before trying something that might leave a mark.

Take your time with everyday spills

A cup of coffee beside the recliner or a snack during a movie can leave a spill no matter how careful everyone tries to be. Start by lifting away any solids gently, then blot liquid with a clean white cloth. Work from the outside toward the center rather than scrubbing back and forth.

Check before you treat a spot

Follow the carpet or fabric manufacturer's care instructions and the product label. Test an approved cleaner in a hidden area first, and never mix cleaning products. If you are unsure what is safe, stop and ask before adding more moisture or another product.

A stubborn spot is frustrating, but repeated scrubbing or stronger mixtures can make the problem worse. Let us know what spilled and which products, if any, you used. Some marks need a different approach, and not every stain can be removed. We would rather talk it through with you than have you damage something you are trying to care for.

Make a comfortable place for company

You do not have to clean every closet before someone spends the weekend. Start with the rooms your guests will actually use. Put fresh towels in the bathroom, clear a little space for their belongings, and wash the guest bedding according to its care labels. Check blankets that have been stored away before putting them back on a bed.

In the bedroom, dust the bedside table and vacuum the floor, including the space beside the bed. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for mattress care rather than reaching for a spray or soaking the surface. A clean place to sleep and room to set down a suitcase usually matter more than a perfectly decorated room.

Leave yourself time to enjoy the season

Try choosing one small job at a time. Take care of the entry today, the furniture another afternoon, and the guest room when you change the bedding. Keep up with the areas that get the most use and let the less urgent things wait their turn. A routine that fits your family is one you have a better chance of keeping.
